Generative AI: Threats and Opportunities for Distance Learning

Imagine a world where the line between reality and illusion blurs, where information can be manipulated in the blink of an eye. In this ever-evolving context, generative AI emerges as a double-edged sword: on the one hand, it catalyzes misinformation through deepfakes, threatening trust and the integrity of the educational environment; on the other, it opens up new horizons for innovation in distance learning (DL). During this closing keynote of the DL Camp, we will explore the impact of these technologies on the current educational landscape. We will analyze how deepfakes facilitate the spread of false information, undermine credibility, and manipulate public opinion, highlighting the urgency of developing robust educational strategies to strengthen learners’ resilience in the face of these digital challenges. At the same time, we will unveil the revolutionary potential of generative AI to unleash educators’ creativity, optimize teaching practices, and foster continuous innovation in DL. This presentation aims to inspire education professionals to integrate these technologies ethically and responsibly, balancing risks and opportunities to build a resilient and innovative digital learning environment that meets the diverse needs of learners.
