Naffi highlights the importance of critical thinking in the face of deepfakes at the “journée de réflexion” at Université Laval

August 30, 2024

On August 27, at the Journée de réflexion sur la pensée critique organized by the Bibliothèque de l’Université Laval, Nadia Naffi led a workshop focusing on deepfakes and the development of critical thinking skills in the context of disinformation. The event, coordinated by Dominique Lapierre in collaboration with Catherine Lamy, Andréanne Sicotte and Marie-Eve Paradis, PhD, began with presentations on the challenges of human reasoning and the distinction between true and false.

Nadia Naffi impressed participants by creating a live audio deepfake in less than a minute, demonstrating the speed and ease with which such manipulations can be produced. She went on to discuss the crucial role of librarians in the fight against AI-fueled misinformation, highlighting their responsibility as experts in detection, education and protection. The workshop also identified the skills needed to support the development of critical thinking within the community, an essential issue in the age of AI and generative technologies.
