Shattering Barriers – The Symposium on Transforming Higher Education through Equity, Inclusion, Disruptive Technologies, and Mental Health Across Multimodal Learning Environments

June 7, 2023 09:00

The bilingual symposium “Shattering Barriers – The Symposium on Transforming Higher Education through Equity, Inclusion, Disruptive Technologies, and Mental Health Across Multimodal Learning Environments” is online and open to the public.

The event aims to address the challenges and opportunities in higher education, focusing on promoting quality, equity, inclusion, and mental health in multimodal learning environments, with special emphasis on the role of generative AI and other disruptive technologies.

A highlight of the symposium will be the launch of the white paper titled “Elevating Higher Education: A Cutting-Edge Roadmap for Quality, Equity, and Inclusion with a Focus on Student and Instructor Mental Health in Multimodal Learning Environments.” This white paper showcases a research project generously funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Development grant, which aimed to study the elements of course design and evaluation strategies that promote high-quality, equitable, and inclusive education, and take into consideration students’ mental health, in multimodal higher education. Moreover, the symposium will explore the transformative potential of generative AI, shedding light on how it can help break down barriers for greater equity and inclusion.

This symposium is supported by various prestigious organizations, including SSHRC, the Chair in Educational Leadership (CLE) in Innovative Pedagogical Practices in Digital Contexts – National Bank of Université Laval, the International Observatory on the Societal Impacts of AI and Digital Technology (OBVIA), which is funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ). Additionally, it is endorsed by the CRIFPE, the CRIRES, the GRIIPTIC, and the Innovation Lab and is in collaboration with co-researchers from 16 postsecondary institutions across five countries (Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Lebanon).

The event will bring together renowned guests, brilliant co-researchers, and esteemed panelists to share their insights and knowledge on innovative initiatives, field experiences, and perspectives on using generative AI to promote quality, equity, inclusion, and mental health in multimodal learning environments.
